My first flight to Digital Dealer was an interesting one. We were to take off from Fort Wayne at 10:20 this morning. The boards at the airport said that it was still on time. Our connecting flight in Detroit was scheduled for a 12:11 departure. We ended up taking off from the Fort at 11:30. It was a 25 minute flight. Impossible to make that connection, right? Well, wrong.

When we landed in Detroit, I turned my phone on and started tweeting about how close this was going to be. There just happened to be a car guy on the flight that we were trying to catch we tweeted back and forth where I was and was deplaning our 1st plane and going to start running. He let the airline attendants know that we were coming. After a 2 mile sprint, we made it to the gate and the doors had just closed. They had held the plane as long as they could and they closed the doors The gal at the desk made to calls and the tower said that it was fine to reopen the doors for us.

Without a social media site like twitter, we would have never made our flight. We were able to communicate through twitter and it saved us a lot of headaches. I think we will still have a headache when we arrive in Florida as I doubt our bags made it.

So how are you communicating with your customers? Are you looking for people on twitter that a looking for a car in your city or area or people that are having car problems? I think that most dealers have the marketing part of things down in communicating specials or sales, but most aren’t actually engaging with their customers that are using twitter everyday. Social media works, it is just how you use it.
